After CBS fired a journalist for prematurely reporting Joe Paterno’s death, we talked last week about the importance of accuracy in media reports. For media organizations, trust is paramount.
Now comes word of another firing, this time of a photographer for violating the public trust by altering photos.
Please use email or the Contact page to answer the following questions by 10 p.m. Monday:
1. How many photographs is the photographer, Bryan Patrick, accused of altering in violation of his newspaper’s ethics policy?
2. What, specifically, is Patrick accused of doing to each photograph?
3. Please provide the quote from the ethics policy that prohibits what Patrick is accused of having done.
4. Who said the following about Patrick (name and title): “If he’s willing to move a couple of egrets around, if he’s willing to jazz up flames to make a photo more exciting, how do we know there aren’t more? … How do we trust the work?”
5. What actions might the Newspaper Press Photographer’s Association take against Patrick if a complaint is filed against him with the body?
